More than 9,600 of America’s best and brightest high school students traveled to Maryland to Elevate Their Futures as they competed for the opportunity to win more than $175,000 in cash awards. The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference was held June 28–July 1 in Baltimore. Participants from across the United States and abroad attended the conference to enhance their business skills, expand their networks, and participate in more than 70 business and business-related competitive events. Mikko Salkola from Los Altos High School received national recognition at the FBLA Awards of Excellence Program on July 1. Salkola won second place in Business Calculations, which recognizes FBLA members who demonstrate an understanding of mathematical functions in business applications. Anya Shrivastava, a student at Mountain View High School, earned third place in Insurance and Risk Management, which recognizes FBLA members who demonstrate an understanding of and skill in basic insurance and risk management principles and procedures. Ada Chung, a rising senior at Los Altos High, was selected as a national finalist in the Graphic Design event. “We had a truly enviable achievement tonight,” said Mike Messner, adviser for both MVLA high schools FBLA chapters. “Mikko’s performance was the best our chapter has ever achieved in Business Calculations. Anya made history for Mountain View with her award, and Ada did something that no one at either school has ever done for her event. It’s a tremendous honor for our school district, and it’s fantastic to have been a part in these students’ journeys.” The awards are part of a comprehensive national competitive events program sponsored by FBLA-PBL that recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. For many students, the competitive events are the capstone activity of their academic careers. In addition to competitions, students immersed themselves in interactive workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall, and heard from motivational speakers on a broad range of business topics.
